    I'm deaf and I manually caption my videos which is a lot of work. I find that even though the auto generated captions are not perfect, I gravitate towards it 95% of the time because they are easier to follow and I think they are actually accurate 95% of the time unlike what some say. A lot of people do not know how to caption properly and some people even disable the auto generated captions option in their videos because they still think the auto generated stuff is as bad as it was 10 years ago. I pay for RUclips premium and find it irritating that YouYube still censors certain words in the captions but not in the audio. If anyone knows of a trick to disable this censorship, I would really appreciate it, but here's a trick for any creator who wants to force their own captions to come up- while in YT Studio, in the video details section, scroll down to tags and type in: yt:cc=on

    Thanks for this video! I also agree that more people need to put more effort into captions. I am a new youtuber, and I decided that it was super important for me to put accurate captions. It takes a LOT of time tbh 😭but making a video accessible (especially to people who are deaf, HoH, or have slow auditory processing) is worth it!! I'm not deaf or HoH, but sometimes my audio processing is a little slow, or the person in the video isn't speaking clearly so captions always come in handy :) Anyway, I came to this video, because in the video I'm preparing to publish tomorrow, I drop an F-bomb and I noticed the censoring.. I was debating whether to write it out or to put like an f*** or some variation, and ultimately decided to look into what would be best to do. SO! This video gave me the answer. No censor, it is 🥰

    A good topic of conversation. My deafness has slowly been blooming from the third grade (40 years ago), and though others are more deaf than I am at my deaf coffee night, I am starting to call myself deaf. I still talk daily all the time, but as the years go by my frustration with communicating increases. If everyone signed, that would make my life easier, but that is not most of my world. While I cannot hear alarms, beeps, conversation in noisy places, I lip read as often as I can. I have many misunderstandings over the years, because even though I tell others I can't hear, people don't remember and think I am being rude for not answering. I like the idea of one term of 'deaf', myself. I think for now, my main focus is seeing it as a blessing, not a loss. I have ASL, I have friends, and might have found a church with a interpreter. Closed captiioning is must. Many things to still be grateful for.

    Your video was shared with my Deaf Culture class, and I'm really glad you made it! I identify as culturally Deaf (Hard of Hearing born), but only in the last 4 months after completing American Sign Language levels 1 & 2. Grew up with our family not knowing I was HoH and used self-coping strategies. Even did speech therapy (thought I had a lisp - that should have been a clue, lol). Yet in one ear I have mild-to-profound hearing loss in wide range of frequencies; yet my other ear is more mild-moderate hearling loss but in more consistent frequencies. Hence they kinda try to compensate for each side. So struggled with the internal "maybe I hear well enough", and it is better with hearing aids, but definitely not "perfect". I often get the comment "You don't sound 'deaf'". That's made me feel like I have to use "Culturally Deaf" inside my Deaf community, and "HoH" outside of it in order to not confuse people. I almost wish it was all just "Deaf".

    You are fortunate you have a regular viewing of movies with subtitles. I have to travel north to the next town and hunt them down. They are rare and it isn't easy to find them. A local movie theater said they didn't show them because the hearing people complained even though it was advertised as a captioned movie. Perhaps I need to go ask the new management and see if procedures have changed.

    • @IamAhmedKhalifa

      If the movie is advertised as captioned, it should remain as captioned. If people are complaining about it, it's not right if they want it removed. It's their fault for not checking. You should speak up about it if you can.

    Why do we have to accommodate the hearing world? Why doesn't the hearing world try to see the world from the deaf/hoh, and accommodate us? It would be nice to have a place like Martha's Vineyard were the deaf and hearing can communicate with each other. It would be nice if the hearing world would be more accommodating to people with invisible disabilities, but it's 2024 and it's sad that more normal people aren't more accommodating to people with invisible disabilities. Normal people need to imagine that they are the one with the invisible disability, like they are deaf. And try to respect that person and try to accommodate them. Who know for one day you could be the deaf one from an accident or sickness that made you deaf.

    Thank you for the nice video! I'd like to ask your opinion about something. So, I'd like to learn a sign language. The reason is because I like learning languages so I can communicate with people in their own language, plus that, even though most of the people can communicate in English those days, I think you get closer to a culture when you learn the language of the country. My problem is the following. Initially I come from Greece, I speak English and I believe my English is good but not perfect and but last seven and a half years I live in Germany. I've learned German, still learning actually, to a point where I can communicate to a good level but I am not very fluent. What sign language should I learn or at least start with? Obviously Greek would be "easier" since I know the language well, but I don't live there, apart from the two weeks that we visit in the Summer , it wouldn't be useful. English would be also OK but I don't live in England either. I mean obviously it would make more sense to learn the German sign language, (DGS) if I am not mistaken, but is that even possible since I don't speak the language very well?

    • @IamAhmedKhalifa
      @IamAhmedKhalifa 4 месяца назад

      Hmm, that's a tricky situation because I doubt you will be able to find resources where you can use your Greek knowledge to learn German Sign Language. And it's even more difficult to find localised German Sign Language e.g. Germany, Austria. You are more likely to find resources when the spoken language "matches" the sign language e.g. Greek and Green Sign Language.

    • @stavroulak.503
      @stavroulak.503 4 месяца назад

      @@IamAhmedKhalifa Thanks for replying so fast 😊 Apart from the resources though, would it be extremely difficult, in your opinion, to learn the German sign language when I am not that fluent with the German language? I mean that's is the one which would be most likely to use or practice since I live in Germany but would it even be possible to learn it?

    • @IamAhmedKhalifa
      @IamAhmedKhalifa 4 месяца назад

      @@stavroulak.503 I don't have experience in that but judging by what I know of languages, it's not impossible, but it will be more difficult. There will be scenarios where it's very hard, like the ability to mouth certain words that you don't know so that others can lipread you. And vice versa.

    • @stavroulak.503
      @stavroulak.503 4 месяца назад

      @@IamAhmedKhalifa Yes, that's what I was thinking too. I don't know I'll give it a try and start from somewhere and if I can't manage I'll try in a language that is possible. It's better than nothing. I've tried to learn the alphabet online and I noticed that most of the signs for the Greek and German alphabets are the same, or at least very similar, even though our alphabets are quite different. Wish me luck and thank you very much for replying 😊

    Considering what Helen Keller said, “Deafness was her worst handicap”. We should listen to Ms. Keller. I am severely / profoundly deaf and I can say living in a hearing world having to learn to talk and read lips to just fit in is difficult. When a hearing person has a clogged ear for a short time and they can’t hear like before, they turn into frustrating angry people. Deafness is the silent handicap.

    I don’t know any deaf people, at all. I don’t even know people that know deaf people, but since I don’t know where I’ll be living by the end of the year, I’m learning ASL since there is a possibility that I will be going to the US. Being completely transparent, I saw an anime about a deaf girl and it really touched me to the point of me wanting to learn some sign language to be able to communicate with someone deaf if I ever meet one. I know 5 spoken languages and I’ve always wanted to learn more so I find this opportunity very intriguing. My idea is to learn ASL and see where I go from there, maybe LSM since I am latin american and that’s the one most used back home (Again I haven’t met anyone deaf yet but still). As someone that likes learning about linguistics and so on I expect learning different sign languages might just be similar in the sense of finding similarities and differences between sign languages and making the later ones easier than the first ones. I mostly hope to have fun and meet some deaf people to practice along the way

      There are many sign languages in English...American, British, Australian, etc. Work out which one you want to learn first and go from there.

      Depends on your own individual need, but the most obvious one would be Irish Sign Language if you live in Ireland.

    Excellent video! I'm not sure what the difference would be but I'm assuming there is some definite frequency in a hearing test that would say, "...if you can hear above this frequency you are hard of hearing. If you can't hear above a certain frequency then you are deaf."

      @IamAhmedKhalifa 7 месяцев назад

      In many case, there isn't a clear line or threshold of when you are hard of hearing vs deaf. Some would argue that there shouldn't be any line at all...it's the same thing.

      I used to work at a hearing aid clinic. I would argue regularly with my hearing aid specialist regarding this issue. She has normal hearing, and she would use the clinical number of what "deaf" is. I would tell her, that she was wrong because she makes it sound like things "aren't that bad" yet. The amount of frustration for the person with the aids should be making that determination, because she seemed to invalidate my experience up until the clinical definition.

    I'm living on the west coast of Canada and labelled Hard of Hearing. I"m more comfortable with "late deafened" because I'm over 70. I'm learning ASL and love it! At the moment I have more hearing friends than deaf/HoH friends but I'm okay with that. But after my hearing test I've struggled to find my footing with life. I definitely feel not part of the hearing world, nor part of the deaf world. I very much appreciate you Ahmed for dealing with this subject. (I'm afraid that there are many, many more people like me...)

      Graham, I'm very touched that you opened up about this to me, thank you. As much as it's great that you are enjoying learning ASL, I can appreciate it's still going to be a challenge to communicate with hearing friends, particularly when most, if not all of them, don't sign. It's a hidden struggle that we all go through...

    So informative honestly. I personally go with the social model because indeed the society is the one creating barriers to our impairments.

    Great video! One small note about eye contact: I (and other autistic people I know) tend to avoid direct two-sided eye contact. It comes with a huge amount of emotional information and quickly distracts from what the person is saying/what we are trying to say. For us, it's more a sign that the person is actively listening when they're looking away, because that means they're focusing on what they're hearing, and it's not a sign of nervousness or deception ☺️ (it's actually very common for the speaker to look away and the listener to look at the speaker's face, and to switch when the roles switch)

    Thank you for sharing your experiences! I'm not Deaf, but it sounds very relatable to other kinds of discrimination/ableism I experience, and it sounds very frustrating. I never heard the word "audism" before, but I'll definitely use it from now on!

    I'm looking to learn sign language because me and my partner are both autistic, which for us means that we go nonverbal sometimes and are unable to speak. (Our current solution is very impractical because we have no easy or healthy way to communicate when that's the case.) Thank you for your input, I was looking for exactly this - an informed opinion of someone who actually knows their stuff. I hadn't considered getting in touch with the local Deaf community yet, but that might actually be a wonderful opportunity to learn and get to know a new culture!

    This was so incredibly helpful and informative. I'm an undergraduate student interested in going into audiology and am doing a presentation on various issues in audiology, specifically in relation to the Deaf community as well as just general accessibility. I'm honestly shocked that some of this even has to be addressed- like the phone calling for appointments (phone calls as the only option for appointments in general is poorly though out- given that there are people who can't use a phone for various reasons: including being deaf or hard of hearing, having trouble speaking, general anxiety related to phone calls, or other things that make communicating via phone a poor option (I personally am autistic and have speech processing issues, so using phones gives me migraines and I struggle to understand what is being said.) The lack of accessibility is hard to believe: honestly the fact that your video non-autogenerated captions was a surprise because so many videos I look at relating to audiology DONT. Going into audiology, I really want to know what current issues and barriers exist between the doctors and the clients, so we can work to improve upon those issues and allow for more open communication so clients can get whatever they need out of the appointment. Audiologists often seem to dominate the conversation despite they fact that they should be there to listen and assist in giving their client whatever tools and information they need, they should be informing them and act as an unbiased resource- rather than pushing any specific therapy, technology, or life upon them. And this domination of the conversation seems to in talking about issues in audiology: most of the resources I find on this topic are by audiologists, most of them hearing, rather than by clients. So hearing this side of the story from someone who is personally impacted by the barriers in place at audiology clinics is so illuminating- and really helps be understand what to keep an eye out for in the future so such negative experiences can be lessened.

      So awesome to hear that there are audiologists like yourself who are keen to go through all of this, listening, wanting to make a change, etc. I love this, and I wish the audiology industry would have the same mindset as you but it's still behind. Thank you for taking the effort to watch the video, to show your passion, to make an impact to individuals' lives, and to make a different within audiology. Your patients are lucky to have you as their audiologist.

    Please don't use Rev as a captioning service. Their captioners are unbelievably unqualified. At least use Rev Pro if you do. 3Play Media is better always, but there's really no good web accessability vendor. VITAC still does their stupid "spaces in brackets" thing, and when you use their centered pop-on service, they don't identify speakers properly. NCI, the National Captioning Institute, is garbage, but not as garbage--their problem being that they still use uppercase captions in 2023--and also made IDs uppercase too for no good reason.

    Hi Ahmed, my wife lost her hearing 1yrs and some months, we bought BTE hearing aid based on audiologycal test, after fiting she could only hear the sound or eco she can't get the actual communication, and the specialist said she should continue use it that with time it will be clear over one month no improvement.

    My husband wears hearing aids but he does it because he is hard of hearing and doesn't know sign language except what he sees me do, and I have hearing loss in my left ear due to domestic abuse years before I met my husband. But I have a hearing aid I just haven't worn it enough to get used to it. It's not from a dr. It is from a company on a commercial and my dog chewed the other one. But it's hard to get used to it.

    • @IamAhmedKhalifa
      @IamAhmedKhalifa 10 месяцев назад

      It's not easy to get used to it. That's why those videos of a person "hearing for the first time" is dangerous and very misleading.
